During the Ancient Greek and Roman periods, capitals were used as a distinguishing factor for classical orders such as the Ionic and Doric. As we move into later periods of the Antiquity time frame, like the Byzantium, we see a dissolving significance of what classifies an order and carvings become less precise. After antiquity, in periods of the Carolingian and Romanesque, there becomes a blending of orders used in capitals signifying a changing of style from more to less specific.
