Generally in our study of the antiquity period of Ancient Greece and Rome, the design of capitals grows more complex and intricate. From the minimalistic Greek Doric style up to the Roman Composite, the emergence of volutes and ornamentation reveals the changing styles. Fast-forwarding to the Romanesque period, there was a clear effort to mimic the ornamented style of Ancient Rome, yet also an improvement in construction techniques allowed for more massive structures. Along with being more massive, Romanesque buildings often were more detailed incorporating art such as trompe l’oeil.
