Going from Ancient Greece to the Romanesque, the overall design of the capitals showed significant change. Starting out, the capitals from Ancient Greece were very detailed. Going to Ancient Rome, the capitals were still complex and had a significant amount of detail. There was a lot of skilled labor available and the capitals were an important part to building during this time. Getting to the Byzantine order, capitals were simple, similarly to how the Romanesque period ended up. This is due to either a lack of skilled labor, or that they were focused on quantity of buildings and the sense of stability.
