As Professor Han discussed in class, there are many differences between the Romanesque and Gothic styles; the Romanesque was building up to the peak of ornament seen in the Gothic period. Similar to both styles is the latin cross plan consisting of a narthex, nave, aisles, transepts, ambulatory, apse, and apsidioles. While the Romanesque style utilized massive poché and squat proportions to convey strength/stability, the Gothic style conveys transcendence through verticality and lightness in design. Contributing to the Gothic other-worldliness, are ribbed vaults, ogival arches, and flying buttresses which structurally redirect loads while using minimal material.
