The Romanesque style of architecture was crucial to political and religious stability which was seen through massiveness in the buildings. This was achieved by thick walls, semi-circular arches, and arcades with rows of arches. An example includes the Cluny Abbey with its stacked buttresses. The Gothic style was about verticality to show how the buildings reached towards the heavens and connected with elements out of this world. It was given the name gothic in a vulgar excess way. Key elements to emphasize this verticality were pointed arches, flying buttresses, and many spires pointing toward the sky.
