The Romanesque style differs from the Gothic style due to the massiveness of the buildings which reflected on strength and the political steadiness at the time. Additionally, the Romanesque style buildings often had semi-circular arches and latin cross plans. On the other hand, the Gothic style buildings had extreme ornamentation and detailing, which most of the Romanesque buildings lacked. Verticality was a key element of the Gothic style which was conveyed through the use of flying buttresses, pointed arches, and ribbed vaults. In comparison, both styles displayed elevated complexity due to increased knowledge of masonry practices. Finally, in the Romanesque Basilica of San Nicola and the Gothic Basilica of St. Denis, the westworks aren’t uniform because of the long amount of time needed to complete the buildings.
