The Romanesque style of architecture originated in Europe and the Roman Empire, with the Gothic style growing out of the Romanesque. The Romanesque style featured rounded arches, had buttresses for vault support, had smaller windows which created a more dark mood, and had little decoration on the outside. On the other hand, the Gothic style was one unified space unlike the Romanesque, had pointed arches, exterior flying buttresses, and had larger stained glass windows which created a more light mood. The Gothic architecture intended for the churches to look like heaven, while the Romanesque architecture style included more massive buildings that were not as ornate.
