Romanesque architecture was focused on massive and bulky structure in order to signify political stability. Gothic architecture was more constructed in a skinny and tall manner. This was in order to make the buildings look other-worldly. Things like flying buttresses were implemented to make the buildings appear thinner and taller. While both styles were rather ornate in design, gothic has a more elaborate look to the buildings, with complex curvature on the ceilings and gargoyles solidifying the other-worldly look.
