This painting, “The School of Athens” by Raphael, depicts the architectural style of the Renaissance period in a few different ways. First off, classical figures such as Plato and Aristotle are depicted in the painting which represents the Renaissance theme of returning to classicism. The Renaissance meant “the rebirth”, so bringing back these figures was an important message. Furthermore, the structural architecture similarly returned to a simpler form, that valued mathematics ratios and geometrical operations to reflect the universe into architectural structure. Lastly, if you were to cut this picture down the middle you would get two nearly identical sides, which reaffirms the periods emphasis on symmetry and balance.
