In my opinion, firmitas, or stability, is the most important point of Vitruvius’ Triad. A building’s longevity, safety, and function all depend on its stability. An unstable building would be too dangerous to enter. Utilitas, or function, is the second most important point. Every building serves a purpose, and its structure and appearance are based upon that purpose. Venustas, or beauty, is least important because the appearance of a structure does not affect its stability or function. Venustas can only add to a building’s firmitas and utilitas, but likely cannot take away from it.
