Each period has unique characteristics, and this can be seen in the capitals. Columns in Ancient Greece had significant fluting and entasis leading up to an intricate capital. Greek columns were very austere. Although the Romans were influenced by the Greeks, their capitals, along with those belonging to the Byzantium, were less intricate. By the Romanesque era, capitals were more basic, and they made up for this in size (which was expressive of religion).
