Design of capitals became less complicated, more variable over time. The Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian capitals reflected strict rules of design and high skills of labor. The Tuscan became simpler and the Composite style became more flexible by combining Ionic and Corinthian. The Byzanitne capitals were more free-style and simpler compared to antiquity period, due to the lack of skilled labor or change of aesthetic value. The Romanesque capitals were less ornamental, less detailed-oriented compared to previous styles as the aesthetic value shifted to massiveness, but Romanesque style kept some influences of Greek/Roman period.
