In Ancient Greece and Rome they have very specific characteristics to identify the different types of capitals, which in turn relate to the column itself. Due to the separation of Eastern and Western Rome (Byzantium), Byzantium was able to create without the rules of their previous empire. This allowed them to try new things, and not fall into ultra specific categories.
