The changing design of capitals reflect the larger stylistic changes that were happening at the same time. In Ancient Greece, there were three distinct orders: Doric, Ionic, Corinthian; of which the capitals seem plain in comparison to Ancient Roman Orders. Ancient Rome’s aesthetic was in response to the austere style of Ancient Greece, which is why it was more decorative. In contrast, after the Antiquity period, there were more exploratory styles, which can be seen in the capitals that do not fit any of the Greek or Roman Orders and are vague abstractions of previous styles.
