In Ancient Greece the capitals of columns went from basic (doric) to more complex (corinthian). The columns were designed for specific types and purposes. As time passed through the Roman and Byzantine empires, the columns became more unique. One of the biggest cultural changes was the shift to Christianity, and showing authority though the construction of buildings. While Romanesque architecture was heavily influenced by Ancient Rome, the capitals differ because they are more individual and change in each building. The buildings became more complex and ornately decorated in order to show the power of the person sponsoring their construction.
