From Greek to Romanesque architecture, the style of capitals has changed representing the cycle of architectural peak followed by a return back to simpler designs. In earlier Greek architecture, the three Greek orders required skilled labor to build the complicated columns and capitals. Soon after, the Romans created five orders inspired from the Greek orders. Next, Byzantine style turned to a more simple look most likely due to the many buildings being built and less skilled labor. Lastly, while still holding on to Roman style, Romanesque capitals were made with less detail, and focused more on the scale of the structures.
