In Ancient Greek architecture, the capitals were very decorative and often times had the most distinguishing features of the columns. As time goes on and we get to Romanesque architecture, the capitals became less and less detailed as more buildings were being built, so less skilled workers were available to complete the jobs. As time went in on, it seemed that minor details became less important, and production rate and size of the buildings became more important.
