Starting back with Ancient Greece the capitals would be more intricate with extreme detail and delicacy. The capitals were also directly at the top of the crowning head. Down the road through byzantine, the capitals would be less detailed with not as much fluting due less skilled workers from the demand for more buildings. Overall it seems that as time went on, details became of less importance as to getting more buildings upright through pure production.
