Over the stretch of time from Ancient Greece to the Romanesque, the design of capitals has changed significantly. They began as relatively simple and slowly progressed in coordination with the changing eras to become more complicated and less cut and dry. The capitals became more decorated as time progressed, as architects began to bend the rules and express a larger sense of individuality over that period. This can be seen specifically up into the Byzantine era where capitals became very unique, reflecting the larger stylistic changes over that period.
