As time went by, the capitals of preference changed with time. The Greeks were known for their classic orders; the doric, ionic, and corinthian. The Italic orders used by the Romans were very much derivatives of these Greek orders. The Byzantine capitals, however, developed their own iconic identity. The architects of the time decided that it would aid in the beauty of their structures to develop more elaborate capitols. Even though these architects may not have been classically versed their columns showed that they were able to continue the progression of architecture.
