Greek and Roman capitals had very defined orders from the most basic of Doric to the more elaborate Corinthian and composite orders. Throughout Byzantium and to Romanesque styles, these rules of defined orders became less followed, and more unique looking capitals emerged. New building designs, inspired by the Greco-Roman period, began to take shape as well. Similar concepts were adopted, but twists were added by Byzantine to Romanesque, much like the changing capitals.
