The three Greek orders were Doric (strongest, often with entasis), Ionic (representing wisdom), and Corinthian (representing beauty, sophisticated). The Romans adopted the three and added Tuscan and Composite. They took a more decorative approach than the Greek, and often superposed orders. During the Byzantium period, there was a style change; though the reasoning remains unclear, it resulted in a “technical decline” – the compositions were not as elaborate as they had been before. When the Romanesque period came around, though it was highly influenced by the Roman style, a lot of combinations and variations were made from the original Roman columns.
