In Ancient Greece, the type of column implemented within a buildings design indicated a great deal of the buildings intentional characteristics. Each class of column had a clearly defined subset of characteristics that indicated whether or not an architect was competent depending on when he used them. However, such a rigid system of implied design seemed to wane as new architectural components and more advanced construction technology progressed. Builders seemed to deviate from the traditional sense of structure to a new and enhanced sense of design that rooted its importance in different ideas. Such examples include the prevalence of churches across Europe.
