First and foremost, Romanesque architecture was massive and fortress-like, whereas Gothic architecture was much more vertical. Both had similar cathedral layouts that mimicked the Latin Cross. Aside from its verticality, Gothic arches were more ogival (Romanesque had semi-circular arches) and there was space between the buttresses (flying). Gothic was also more detailed and ornament (archivolts, tympanum, trumeau, etc.). Lastly, Gothic had more complex masonry and stained glass windows.
