Although both the Romanesque and Gothic periods focused on cathedral and churches, both had their distinct characteristics. Romanesque architectures were defined by their massiveness, thick walls, and arcade with rows of arches while the Gothic architectures were identified by verticality and more developed building techniques shown by flying buttresses. The Romanesque arch was a semi-circular arch that consisted of keystone, voussoir, and springer. Gothic architecture can be easily determined by its pointed arch with ogive/ogival. The Gothic architecture also used a ribbed vault that was lighter thus had a greater span while Romanesque used Groin Vault.
