The main difference between the Romanesque and the Gothic styles is the overall weight distribution of the building aspects. More specifically the Romanesque style was intentionally heavier (fortress like) for structural stability, this was achieved with the use buttresses, perfect examples would be the Abbey Clooney’s.  However Gothic style’s primary purpose was to transcend the normal and create a more heavenly/floating appearance, an example Norte Dame de Paris. With this style it focused on verticality and the use of spires, flying buttresses, ogives, and ribbed vaults. Which differed from the Romanesque groin vaults. With the Gothic there was also extreme ornamentation and ethereal illumination through the use of the clerestory, which was primarily made of stained glass which added a depth to the interior as well as serving an educational purpose.
