The Romanesque style took inspiration from Roman Architecture, (hence the name) particularly conveying strength both politically and religiously through sheer massive size. This concept was reinforced through thick walls and semi-circular arches. On the other hand, Gothic was influenced from this previous style, but instead was centered around the idea of being otherworldly. These churches conveyed the idea of transcending through key elements of verticality such as the ribbed vault, pointed arch, and flying buttress. The rosette was a common staple in Gothic churches, being one way light was illuminated to the interior.
