The Romanesque and Gothic styles were similar in the aspect that they both used the Latin cross plan and had prominent westworks. One key difference between the two is the arcuation. Romanesque style used semi-circular arches while Gothic used pointed arcuation, called ogival. Another key difference is the rib vaults that were commonplace in the Gothic style. Gothic style was also more vertical, while Romanesque was more massive.
