Week 3 Response

One of the most salient differences between Romanesque and Gothic styles that we highlighted in class was the difference in vaults. The Romanesque vault is a groin, and the Gothic one is a ribbed vault and is more open. Additionally, during the Gothic time period, the concept of elongation and verticality was highlighted in every aspect of the building, whether it be the ogival or the finial element at the top of a spire to give extra height. Overall I believe that the transition from the Romanesque bulky architecture to the Gothic ornate architecture exemplifies more emphasis on venustatis.
