Romanesque and Gothic architecture differ in many ways stylistically. A distinction of Romanesque architecture is the large, utilitarian structures of buildings. They were massive in order to portray stability and strength. Walls were thick and there was a heavy use of semi circular arches. This differs from the Gothic style which was much more detailed and had a lot or ornamentation throughout. A main feature of the gothic style is verticality. Other distinct features are ribbed vaults, pointed arches and flying buttresses.
