The key element of Romanesque architecture is massiveness, while the key element of Gothic architecture is verticality. Some components of the Romanesque style include buttressing, semi-circular arches, arcades with rows of arches and a latin cross plan. Gothic style is represented through ribbed vaults (an alteration of the Romanesque groin), flying buttresses, pointed arches, and spires. It also contained ethereal interior illumination and was extremely detailed and ornamented. These key elements are even apparent in jamb figures, as in Romanesque cathedrals they were staged in a contrapposto, while in Gothic cathedrals the figures appeared elongated.
