The Romanesque style emphasizes the sense of massiveness while the Gothic style focuses more on verticality. Both styles used the Latin cross plan and had westworks, but they differed in many ways. Romanesque architecture had semi-circular arches and groin vaults, while Gothic architecture had pointed arches and ribbed vaults. In addition, the Gothic architecture used a lot of flying buttresses in the exterior of the churches which weren’t used in the Romanesque style, and its portals included ornamental elements, such as the jambs and archivolts.
