The Romanesque and Gothic styles overlap in their usage of the Latin Cross base plan of the church layout. A large difference between the two styles is the Romanesque’s fortress, massive structures versus the Gothic’s ethereal, vertical qualities. Arches in the Romanesque period were semi-circular compared to the ogival Gothic style. Romanesque featured buttresses to fortify the thick walls while in the Gothic, flying buttresses and ornate westworks decorate the building. In comparison to the Romanesque, Gothic churches had many more windows, that may have even been stained glass, to illuminate the space and add to the ethereal quality.
