While close chronologically the disparities between the Gothic and Romanesque are quite pronounced. The most glaring of these would be the general composition of the two. Romanesque structures tended to be much heavier and stocky. Many Romanesque structures were marked by large amounts of thick buttressing and plain wide facades with heavy amounts of poché. Conversely Gothic structures tended toward verticality and a slimmer form. Poché was greatly reduced and slender flying buttresses and rib vaults were introduced to thin out the form. The ogival arch also became a standard in the Gothic over the Roman arch of the Romanesque.
