The Romanesque style is rooted in Roman, Byzantine and Islamic architecture. Buildings that were designed under the Romanesque style seemed more structurally stable with use of buttresses. Romanesque cathedrals used rounded arches in their cathedrals. The Gothic style evolved from the Romanesque. To the untrained eye, the first major difference is the high level of ornamentation seen during the Gothic period. The most notable example today of Gothic architecture is Notre Dame. Instead of the rounded arches found in the Romanesque period, pointed, or Ogival arches are used. Ornamentation details found in the Gothic period are: flying buttresses and gargoyles.
