The Romanesque period consisted of massive structures that helped represent religious and political stability. The structures had semi-circular arches and heavy buttresses for vault support. They also had thick walls, small windows, and typically represented the Latin cross plan. As we transition to the gothic period, these structures changed from bulky and massive to elongated and vertical. Stained glass windows were used to let in light and create an illuminate, heaven like atmosphere on the inside. Ribbed vaults and flying buttresses were heavily introduced and used in this period as well. Also, while there was still resemblance of the Latin cross, there was a lot more variety. For instance, in the English Gothic we see the recurring theme of double transepts.
