The main difference between Romanesque architecture and Gothic is that Romanesque structures tend to be bigger and have more rounded arches. In contrast, Gothic architecture has these arches that are pointed upwards known as ogives. Many romanesque structures are classified with heavy buttresses with faces having a great deal of pochés. For Gothic structures, they are mainly supported by ribs and buttresses as well. In terms of churches and holy places, the Romanesque structures were known to have barrel vaults whereas Gothic structures had groin vaults. In contrast to Romanesque architecture of being heavy and stocky, Gothic structures tend to be slender and more vertical with an abundance of stained glass windows for light to seep through.
