The Romanesque and Gothic styles differ most prominently with regards to the size. For example, The Romanesque period featured massive structures that had heavy poché and heavy buttresses, as well as semi-circle arch’s to focus on the structure’s pure massiveness. On the other hand, the Gothic period featured less bulky structures where they used rib vaulting, pointed arches, and flying buttresses to help efficiently manipulate the stones more effectively. With regards to style, structures during the Gothic period were much more decorative with more ornate elements which are opposite of the Romanesque period’s values of only focusing on achieving great size.
