This image resonates directly with the architecture found throughout the Renaissance period. The proportions of the arches and wall are all symmetrical, a key characteristic of Renaissance architecture. Raphael, the artist, capitalizes on achieving symmetry by showing us down the middle of the hall and with the scholars compositionally balanced in the foreground. The barrel ceilings are another element found in Renaissance architecture. I also enjoy how the figures, both made in statue and the humans placed on the steps, are all posed in contrapposto, which although we first mentioned while studying the Gothic, it still is seen throughout the Renaissance era.
