During lecture we learned about Virtuvius’ Triad and its implications on structures of the time period. I believe the most important pillar of building was strength (firmitatis). I believe this not to be true only for the time period but for our nuanced view of architectural history. If a building was not strong enough to stay around we would have lost the opportunity to study its architecture. Ranking utility and beauty is very difficult for a variety of reasons. I think that buildings with a strong sense of utility and multiple uses are important, but the magic of design lies in the beauty of a building and is where a structure truly draws its significance from.
