Week 5 Response

Both of these works are from the Baroque period where there was a primary effort to depict movement and dramatic qualities to buildings and art altogether. The image on the left is a church designed by Borromini where he used many ovals and contropasta in order to put emphasis on the fluid motion created by viewing the building by guiding people’s eyes throughout viewing the entire structure. Similarly, the image on the right is of Bernini’s sculpture of David that shows him throwing a stone in creating motion to allow viewers to feel a more dramatic sentiment through its contropasta. The church represents the more decorative idea of the Baroque period through ovals, while the sculpture puts more emphasis on the dramatic emotion through viewers being allowed to put perspective on what is actually happening in the sculpture.
