I happen to side with Didascolo. The argument he makes in favor of ornamentation is presented in a manner that works not to discredit past architectural achievements, but to use them in a didactic manner. If architecture were to shun advancements, the golden standard of beauty epitomized by the classics would fade away. If all structures are beautiful, how can we tell what a beautiful structure is? If Protopiro had his way, architecture would be much more redundant; and design would be a very “cookie cutter” process.
