I would side with Didascolo, and his argument that ornamentation is necessary to a degree in architecture. Protopiro argued that architectural elements like tympana, rustications, and decoration on doors/windows were “interruptions”. While I agree that there is a point where such elements become excessive, without any, there would not be much room for originality or uniqueness among architecture. Didascolo made a good point when he said “buildings were built to satisfy the taste of the public, not that of the critics”, and I believe that the public, which includes a variety of personalities, probably tends to enjoy some ornamentation.
