Classical elements in Labrouste’s Bibliothèque Nationale include ribbed vaults on the ceiling, rosette-like windows in the center of the domes, and ionic columns with volutes indicating the building is a academic structure, specifically a library. Modern elements include cast iron columns, windows, and exposed arches. Using cast iron in the columns and arches allows for narrow features and larger open spaces. The thin iron columns used in this work represent a change in building materials in architecture because stone columns cannot be this thin.
