Labrouste’s Bibliothèque Nationale was built to reestablish a French style. Materials, especially iron, changed the way buildings could be built. The columns clearly draw inspiration from Antiquity with the volutes being characteristic of the Ionic order which is used to convey wisdom. Due to the innovation of iron, the change in construction materials allows for different proportions that are not seen in the Classical style. Another element only made possible by modern technology is the grid of domes (domes have been done, for example the Rotunda). Each dome has an oculus and is formed with plaster reinforced by iron mesh.
