Classical elements of Labrouste’s Bibliothèque Nationale include ribbed vaults that jut down from the ceiling at sharp angles. Ionic capitals adorn the columns and signify the utility that a library brings to society. Multiple Rosette windows are inlaid within the ceiling that present light. Modern elements of Labrouste’s work are seen by the proportions achieved by the columns made of cast iron which would have not been possible if classical construction materials were used. Additionally, there is much more ornamentation that is apparent and would not have existed in a more classical work accompanied by excess design.
