The use of numerous oculi at the top of each vault, as well as the prominent use of the roman arch along the walls gives the library a distinctively Roman inspiration. Mosaic tiling and pendentives, while not unique to, does evoke a Byzantine character in the ceiling. While the columns are distinctively Ionic, their construction is clearly modern as evidenced by the slenderness, a proportion impossible classically, made possible by modern metal work. This is further echoed through the prominent metal framework, while smaller details, like the mix-match of cartouches, festoons, and heavy trompe l’oeil denotes a more modern aesthetic.
