When French architect Pierre-François-Henri Labrouste created his first library, the Biblithèque Sainte-Genevieve, he created a modern design. It had large windows, cast iron arches and iron meshes to create a stronger building, and utilized the latest technology. Later, Labrouste created the Bibliothèque Nationale. This included ribbed vaulting, a caryatid entrance and domes. Each dome has an oculus which allowed for light to come in. It also included detailed masonry along with Ionic capitals. Due to new advancements in construction, the vaulted ceilings were made with plaster instead of stone. This building contained both classical and modern touches.
