Labrouste’s Bibliotheque Nationale demonstrates how classical aesthetics can be meshed with the new technology of the first Industrial Revolution. The Greek ionic capitals are fitting in the sense that they represent wisdom. The openness of the building, created by the use of large arches and domes, is classical in nature. These classical elements are modernized by the use of modern materials that make the structure light and sturdy. The use of cast iron on the ribbed vaults is a perfect example of how this new material can be designed to feel classical.
