Labrouste’s Bibliothèque Nationale build after the first industrial revolution, the library’s construction is under the context of material revolution, particularly glass and cast iron. Influenced by the Crystal Palace, the library utilized the iron frame for supporting, as well as introducing transparent glass upon the dome to introduce natural light. However, it also refers back to classical features like ionic columns indicated by their volute, which signifying wisdom. Personally, I find the library somehow resembles the gothic architecture, with the ribbed arch, and the thin iron pillar which attributes emphasizes the building’s vertically by making it tall and skinny.
